BIRD Design Research Symposium: Creating New Realities Today

by Florian Bertram @ 9:09 pm on Events  — Comments Off

Simon Grand, Academic Director of RISE developed the concept and co-organized the BIRD Design Research Symposium on “Creating New Realities Today” at the 4th and 5th April 2008 in Basel. Furthermore, he moderated the panel discussion on “Design Research and Meaning: Enacting New Tecnologies". Prof. Rolf Pfeifer, Director of the AILab of the University Zurich and Member of the RISE Advisory Board held a presentation on “How the body shapes the way we think: Design Principles for Intelligent Systems".

About the BIRD Research Symposium:
Designers enact and shape the realities as they are in the present, and they create and realize new realities and future possibilities. Designers work on the contingency of the world as it is, and they explore the world as it could be. It is this particular character of a design-specific way of knowing and acting, which is at the core of the BIRD Design Research Symposium 2008 in Basel. The research focus of the conference is on describing, understanding and explaining design as a way of creating new realities, on exploring, discussing and comparing multiple approaches and strategies of designers in this perspective, as well as on their study in design research.

Creating new realities relates to a core dimension of design and the design process in general; the BIRD Symposium 2008 will particularly focus on this core dimension in the context of the present situation: How do designers create new realities, at the beginning of the 21st century? What are particular opportunities and challenges of designing today? Thereby, it will be interesting to discuss, whether they ways in which designers create new realities is particular today or whether is essentially the same independent of specific contexts and situations; whether their interpretations of recent developments and current challenges influences their ways of creating new realities. In essence, we are thus interested in understanding the particular repertoires and ways of knowing, which are important for design practice and design theory today.

RISE Management Research Association founded

by Marcos Garcia @ 11:34 pm on Events  — Comments Off

The association “RISE Management Research” has the objective to support scientifically relevant management research on the topic of the commercialization of science and technology.

It sees itself as a complementation of the traditional academic management research as well as an entrepreneurial research platform, enabling managers, entrepreneurs, established firms and new ventures to participate actively in the interdisciplinary research process and in the debate of international management research.

This type of management research should lead to innovative insights, a relevant research agenda, robust knowledge, which has an impact on the international academic discourse. At the same time, relevant knowledge is produced for management practice, as a basis for a fundamental reflection on management and entrepreneurship in the context of the commercialization of science and technology.

With this resolutions today the “RISE Management Research” Association was founded.

Founding members are: Daniel Bartl, Daniela Blettner, Marcos García Pedraza, Dr. Simon Grand, Philipp Tuertscher, and Matthäus Urwyler.

To the Managing Board were elected: Dr. Simon Grand (president), Daniel Bartl (executive director), Stefan Arn (CEO of Adnovum, rep of a software venture), Paul Nakagaki (Head of R&D Strategy, Hoffmann La Roche, rep of a healthcare corporation), and Tom Widmann (Founder of Actelion, rep of a biopharmaceutical venture).

RISE Leadership Session at the ISC 2004

by Philipp Tuertscher @ 6:49 pm on Events  — Comments Off

Basic research is a fundamental source for innovation and growth, leading to substantial economic and cultural value. The firms, institutions and individuals involved in basic research potentially appropriate substantial financial returns. At the same time, basic research implies a high degree of uncertainty, ambiguity, complexity and unpredictability, which makes the successful realization of such returns very difficult. As a consequence, attracting, generating and allocating the financial resources necessary to do basic research is a major challenge in most industries. But: “What are viable business models for basic research?”

Although basic research thus provides interesting opportunities for the realization of financial profit, it is seen as a public and governmental responsibility, due to the inherent uncertainties, the public relevance and the national interests involved. However, the financial situation of the public institutions and governmental organizations is precarious today. At the same time, innovation and growth based on basic research is seen as increasingly important for firms and institutions to succeed in the highly competitive and dynamic business environment today.

The RISE leadership session explored alternative models for attracting, generating and allocating the financial resources necessary to facilitate basic research, in the sciences, in technology, in management, and in art. This exploration of possible business models for basic research will be launched by personalities who cover various innovative aspects of this theme:

Stefan Arn, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2003, founder and CEO, Adnovum Informatik AG, probably the most successful Swiss software engineering company. Adnovum successfully transforms outstanding technological expertise and leading edge knowledge into robust, reliable customer-specific software. While the entire industry shrank in the last few years, Adnovum grew over 30% within the same time period (→ AdNovum).

agent.ZAI, founder and CEO of etoy, a pioneer in media art. etoy gained international recognition with highly recognized initiatives, like “digital hijack” (prix ars electronica) and “toywar” (trademark battle against eToys). etoy is structured as a firm and financed through the etoy.SHAREHOLDER concept. One of their core investors is the venture capitalist Joi Ito, who will also participate in the session (→ etoy and → Joi Ito).

Dr. Simon Grand, founder and academic director, RISE Research Center for Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, University of St. Gallen HSG. The research center it financed by a series of technology corporations (like Adnovum, Altana, Hewlett Packard, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Hoffmann La Roche), and conducts basic management research on the commercialization of science and technology, with an empirical focus on information technology and biotechnology. (→ RISE).

The RISE leadership session challenged unquestioned pre-judgments and explored controversial propositions about the successful attraction, generation and allocation of financial resources for basic research, as well as introduced concepts and business models relevant for the financing of basic research within corporations and academic institutions.
